Windows7 Now has a Larger Share than XP

If license purchasing is any indication of success, at least it is objective, then Windows 7 has been a success. By last count in July the number of licenses had reached 175 million. So it has been a success.

Microsoft projections are at least 350 million by the end of the year. That roughly translates to about 30 million copies of Windows 7 per month.
The success of Windows 7 should be making Microsoft sing like a canary. But instead it has not been so extravagant. Maybe that is because the iPad, iPhone and other Apple maneuverings have dominated the news. It is really hard to compete with Apple these days in news breakouts, notwithstanding the fact that Windows 7 has basically put away any semblance to Vista. These two products seem to have been designed by two different companies.

The question is now, how will XP users make the transition? There were always some issues to deal with before a transition could take place. Will existing applications work on Windows 7? What about existing drivers, say printers, or network, or video and audio; will they continue to work as expected? But most important, is Windows 7 stable?

Slowly these questions have been answered with a yes.

A Forrester Research study showed that Windows 7 was powering close to 7.4% of all corporate PCs just six months after its release. While this number seems small, it represents about a 1.25% growth increase per month. That is also more than double the corporate adoption rate of Windows Vista at a comparable point in time in its release cycle. Vista implementation usage in enterprises topped off at 12.6% after three years, and that is 50% more than Windows XP after a similar period.

In all, the rise of Windows 7 should be a good point for Microsoft, but it comes with a warning…they should make sure that the product that they release has as few flaws as possible; moreover, even if without flaws it should work seamlessly to keep the consumer satisfied.
